August 2 - Day 59 - My Axe is Bigger than Yours

We made a commitment to meet with Stephanie from the Blackfly Gazette at Bistro this morning to wrap up the interview,  but in reality, we just wanted Charles to cook for us once more before we headed on down the road.  Stephanie had done her research based on last nights discussions, and had visited the blogs, had a look at the Georgian Bay area online, and was pretty well tuned in to what we were all about.  Let's eat!

The breakfast menu at Bistro is just too confusing.......you can't decide what to order because it all looks great.........Sid and Jon ordered the Super Grill.......I had the crepe wrapped omlete, topped  w/hollandaise sauce.........check it out......it tasted better than it looks.

With Tim Nicholas
We had the opportunity to meet Tim Nicholas and his brother at Bistro.  Tim is active as a leader in his community and represents the Tobique First Nation all the way to the national level.  He generously made an unsolicited donation to our cause on behalf of his family, which we gratefully accepted.  It was great to chat with him and discover some of the history of the area, and also find out that his other brother Graydon is the current Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick.  What a really nice soft spoken knowledgeable man he was.  He exuded a great feeling of warmth and friendship, and it was fantastic to meet him.

OK, so we are supposed to be riding across Canada, not eating our way across it.  Time to get on the bikes and get rolling.  Our plan was to stick to the secondary roads along either side of the St.John River, on what we now call "The Fiddlehead Route", and that turned out to be a great call.  Traffic was minimal, the road surface was not too bad, and we had views of the river most of the way. It was much like riding many of the back roads around Blue Mountains, or over at the cottage in Tiny Township.  Really nice terrain all the way.
These are the cows, that produce the milk, that they make the cream from, for
OREO COOKIES
We passed through Florenceville Bristol "The French Fry Capital of The World".......a pretty bold claim, but when McCain is the largest employer in town, there just might be some truth to it.

We had churned out some pretty good km's before stopping for lunch in Hartland, also with some McCain ties, but also home of The Worlds Longest Covered Bridge at 1,282 feet.........there are a lot of like World Records and stuff here in New Brunswick.......does anyone check on this or can you just claim whatever you want???

We really should have ridden through...........next time

I got a bit of a shock when I asked the kids at the tourist information centre how far it was to Nackawic, where Jon had already arrived and set up camp.  They told me 70km, and given that we had started late, and just stopped for a leisurely lunch, all of a sudden we were in doubt if we could get there before the street lights went on.  No worries.......we booted it down the road, and the 70km turned out to be more like 55km, so coming around the corner and seeing the Nackawic sign was a blessing.
Home of the World's Largest Axe!
I do not have a picture of the axe just yet, but Jon was lucky enough to view this instrument, and snapped a few which I will share sometime soon.  The obvious question is, Who uses the Worlds Largest Axe?  Likely the Worlds Largest Lumberjack. You want World Records.........come to New Brunswick.

Jon met us at camp, and described how he was lured by the sound of live classic rock from across the river, and upon investigation, found a grand opening party of a local cottage brewery, where they were serving up their brew at $5 a glass, and had some free food on the barbie.........sold.......we headed right over.  You'll never guess the name of the brewery.............yep......BIG AXE BREWERY
Hey, great people who made us very welcome, superb music, great food, and really good beer.  My favourite was the IPA, so bought a couple of take home jugs, and a T-shirt.  No time to blog.....absolute crash when I got to camp.

Some parting shots for the day....................
Hard to see, but bald eagle in the tree at camp

I loved the Hartland sign

Follow the line......you are getting sleepy......very sleepy
