August 7 - Day 64 - A Run Down The Island

It was a rainy night, and it was still coming down when we woke up.  Not just light rain either, it was coming down steady and hard.  Although by now we are no strangers to bad weather, it is never nice to start the day with a huge soaker, so we went about our usual morning routine a little slower than usual, hoping for a break in the downpour so we could jump on the bikes.

Like this all day long

Our route today would take us from the Confederation Bridge down to the ferry station at the south end of the island.  Our break arrived and we were on the road quickly.  The ride was an absolute pleasure, riding through endless vistas of rolling farmland before we made a second pass through Charlottetown, where we dined last evening.  Once out of town on the other side, it was more of the same, with endless potato fields on either side of the highway.  The red soil for which PEI is famous was everywhere, and I am sure I still have some in my cleats.

Potatoes in the field.......big red

Our campground was in a beautiful spot at The Northumberland Provincial Park, with a great beach, and view of the Wood Islands ferry station across the bay.  Sid's daughter Kelly and her three sons, Jack, Max, and Henry (great kids) were joining us in camp for the night, so we got the past on the boil, and used up that last jar of Mama Cicco's tomato sauce.  Great dinner.

Sid and I plan to get up early and catch the 9:00 ferry, with Jon and Kelly following along later on the 11:30.  Bye to PEI, and hello Nova Scotia.

Town signs look like they were the product of a school contest

Very unique and beautiful

I saw this small sign for the first time at a small restaurant/market beside the highway.  Apparently you can apply to be on the trail, which gives your establishment a lot of additional exposure.

Fresh from the field in the market.......sometimes you wish you had a backpack.

An interesting lawn ornament on a rural property.........

Cormorants on an old bridge abutment leaving Charlottetown
